<p>The vaping industry is heavily regulated, which presents unique challenges when it comes to marketing. Our task was to navigate these regulations while improving 180 Smoke&#8217;s online presence and SEO rankings. Due to regulations in the space paid Google Ads were out of the question, we explored different vape shop marketing strategies and settled our focus on SEO and driving more traffic from Google&#8217;s organic results.</p>

<p>We began by redesigning their website&#8217;s wordpress blog, creating a more user-friendly and engaging platform for their customers, previously the blog had a different design from the main site. We aligned the designs of both the blog and the main site. We then focused on optimizing their website, adding new content, and improving category optimizations. This allowed their category pages to rank better on search engines, which is crucial for driving organic traffic.</p>
<p>Our efforts have resulted in 180 Smoke showing up on Google for over 60,000 keywords, a number that continues to grow. The website now receives tens of thousands of visits each month organically from Google.</p>
<p>We also wrote blog posts on their popular products, focusing our efforts on SEO due to the industry&#8217;s regulations and restrictions. <p>Nearside is in an extremely competitive industry, competing with some major players in the banking industry. Nearside wanted to show on Google organically for more keywords and drive more traffic to their site. They already had a blog but didn&#8217;t know how to best utilize it to increase their traffic and rankings. They were looking for an agency that could work with them closely and collaborate with their internal team to drive results. As the banking industry is heavily regulated they needed an agency that could not only help them create high-quality content but also ensure it follows their guidelines and passes an internal legal review before ever getting posted publicly.</p>
<p><strong>The solution<br />
</strong>Nomadic Advertising worked with Nearside to first identify low-hanging fruit by evaluating their existing website pages and blog posts for potential keywords we could rank for. As the banking industry is heavily regulated there were certain terms we had to stay away from and certain topics that were highly sensitive. Our team started by identifying keywords that Nearside could rank for, despite limitations on wording, that we could use. We optimized their previous blog posts and existing pages. We started seeing some quick wins as Nearside&#8217;s blog started to rank for many keywords that were previously missed with their past content. Our team held regular weekly meetings with the Nearside team to ensure we stayed on track and kept everyone updated on what we were working on at any given moment. Since the banking industry has many major players and highly competitive terms, Nearside needed help growing their domain authority and improving Google&#8217;s trust with them. Our team set out on a search for high-quality sites that we could help Nearside get links from. We found opportunities and helped Nearside secure many high-quality links, helping them to improve their domain authority and ability to rank for more competitive terms.</p>
<p><strong>The results</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;ve helped Nearside rank for 47,000+ finance-related keywords organically on Google. We did this through on-page optimization of their site, the creation of thousands of words of content for their website/blog, and helping them to increase their domain authority. Much of the content we created was educational content that helped them rank for keywords that their target audience would search for such as “Sole Proprietorship vs. Corporation”. Making it easier for our team to get around sensitive terms/topics while also adding value to potential new users of their platform.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2>What is the Google “Medic” Update?</h2>
<p>In August 2018 Google released an update that was quickly dubbed as the Google “Medic” update due to the large amount of websites in the medical industry that were affected. Although not every website affected by this update was related to the medical industry most of the sites affected were medical sites. What this update did exactly is still up in the air, but in this post we are going to go over the steps we took to help one of our clients make a full recovery.</p>
<p>To get a better idea of what kind of websites were affected by this update Barry Schwartz did a small survey and collected information from website owners who were affected. You can see the results below:</p>

<h2>Why did websites drop in rankings?</h2>
<p>As stated previously exactly what the Google Medic Update affected is unknown. Although there have been some theories for us to go off of. Many claim that the Google Medic Update targeted authority and trustworthiness, an important factor for the health industry.</p>
<p>When our team first analyzed the situation we decided to focus on building up the trust and authority of websites that were affected. Below you can see the large drop the site we were focusing on saw in August. Although the update officially happened in the first week of August it took a few more days for the site to really see the full affect of it.</p>

<h2><span id="How-we-recovered" class="ez-toc-section"></span>How we recovered</h2>
<p>Our client immediately felt the impact on business from dropping in rankings, eager to get back to the top of Google we went after a multi-pronged approach. Although it’s hard to say which part of our approach had the biggest impact on our clients recovery we will detail all the changes we made below. As mentioned above our priority was to increase Google’s trust in our client’s website again.</p>
<h3>Schema Optimization</h3>
<p>The website we were working on already had some schema markup present but it was not very detailed. We updated it to include additional information. Additionally we added schema to the about page, including person schema highlighting important health professionals.</p>
<h3 class="title"><span id="Guest-Posts" class="ez-toc-section"></span>Guest Posts</h3>
<p>Our team found a few prominent health blogs in a similar space to post on. Our high quality posts were incredibly relevant to the client and their work. Providing Google with additional references to our clients website as well as the kind of work that they do</p>
<h3 class="title"><span id="Content-Creation" class="ez-toc-section"></span>Content Creation &amp; Page Optimization</h3>
<p>We had our professional writers work with the client to come up with additional content for their site. We added thousands of words in content over a period of 3 months. This content was spread out throughout the site including on the homepage as well as many additional new pages we created targeting specific keywords that we had lost traction for. The content went into more depth on the kind of services our client provided and their experience working with these services. In addition we posted a few blog posts.</p>
<h3 class="title"><span id="Hosting-Update" class="ez-toc-section"></span>Hosting Update</h3>
<p>Before this update our client was using a host they had found themselves. We moved them to our ultra fast hosting, boosting the websites load time. Additionally we set them up on Cloudflare to ensure no matter where people connected from they were able to see the site as soon as possible.</p>
<h3 class="title"><span id="Site-Redesign-Usability-Updates" class="ez-toc-section"></span>Site Redesign &amp; Usability Updates</h3>
<p>We conducted a few visual upgrades to the site to improve usability and provide users with a better overall browsing experience. These updates were conducted on the homepage as well as on all the new pages that were created. Over the next few months we will be updating the rest of the pages on the site.</p>
<h2><span id="The-Results" class="ez-toc-section"></span>The Results</h2>
<p>Although it is impossible to say which updates of ours had the biggest impact and how much our updates had to do with the medic update the results speak for themselves.</p>

<p>Our client saw a huge boost in ranking over the next three months as we continually updated their site. They are now ranking even better than before the medic update and continue to climb up the rankings.</p>
<p>As previously mentioned it’s hard to say which areas were most affected by the Medic Update and which of our updates had the biggest impact in helping our client recover but at the end of the day we are thrilled to have been able to help them make a full recovery and hope that they will continue to increase in ranking over the next few months.</div>
